How long would it take to drive from Southern Village in Chapel Hill to Pittsboro and then to Carrboro and then Hillsborough and then Durham and then Chapel Hill .... back to Southern Village? I suppose Mapquest would give us an estimate.

Whatever that is, imagine a bus traveling that route and making key stops along the way at places ranging from train and bus stations to shopping centers and developments, possibly including places like Meadowmont. Imagine buses circulating in opposite directions on the same route all day and into the evening?

I wonder if there is any plan to this project. How will all of the stories be presented? Or is this just a chance for those who want to tell their "stories" to do so?

If I were doing this, I would look for specific stories, prime the pump, and then welcome additions. By starting off is such an apparently diffused manner, I wonder if any coherent "picture" will emerge. But then this is an art project, not a journalism undertaking so I guess those who like that sort of thing will be very happy.

I live in two worlds, one here in Chapelborham and the other in the southeast corner of France, in Nice.

Our local chamber of commerce there has launched a huge campaign to promote business among local merchants - stickers, posters, activities, etc.

Where is that taking place in Chapelboroham? I have not seen it.

Where are the pictures of community leaders of all kinds shopping at local businesses and talking about it, just for example? I don't see them anywhere.

Smith Level Road project

I drove over to Carrboro yesterday to learn more about the plans for Smith Level Road improvements around the Carrboro High School and Culbreth Road intersection, down to the bottom of the hill by the elemenatary school.

It looks like this will begin in Jan 2011, all other things being equal, and may take 2 years to complete!

There will be sidewalks added all along the work route, and I urged them to coordinate with Chapel Hill and Carrboro on filling any resulting gaps.

The NC Department of Transportation people, who were very helpful and very well-informed, said that they expected the South Columbia St project to be completed before Smith Level begins. That's relevant to our link in Southern Village with downtown Chapel Hill - if both wind up under construction at the same time. They assured me that this would be coordinated to avoid that happening.

Could we not combine the power of the internet with the good will of our neighbors and come up with a huge number of new pooling possibilities? Combined with Chapel Hill Transit and Durham Area Transit Authority, there surely are a lot of errands and trips where we could all do one another and the environment - not to mention our pocketbooks - a big favor. Surely the technology cannot be that tought to do that would allow each of us to say - I'm headed off to COSTCO on Tuesday, can I get something for you or would you like to come with me? Or wherever one might be headed?

Meanwhile, don't forget that we have Zipcar in Chapel Hill.

I think there are far more productive ways in which to utilize these resources, as much as I believe in art. This is responding to the demands of a small niche that may or may not make a significant contribution to the longterm economic sustainability of downtown.

For example, how about a website that shows all of the businesses along the route of each bus line so that someone living near a bus stop is fully apprised of all of the commercial acitivities easily accessible by bus from that location....and reminding those who do not take a bus regularly how well the Chapel Hill Transit program - for example - works in telling us when the next bus will arrive before we leave our home or office...or, with the right equipment, wherever we may be.

I think that should be a far higher priority, just for example.....

What concerns me most about this project is the realization of how noisy the traffic is on 54. If one stands on any of the sidewalks, or in the parking lot at Glen Lennox, for example, it is a near constant roar.

Meadowmont is set back far enough to keep this to a minimum, but from a sheer livability standpoint, this is like living next to an Interstate highway unless one wants to live in a sound-insulated cubicle in one of those large buildings.

Surely, a smart designer could have made much better use of the land, but it probably would not have generated the return that this project may return, if ultimately successful.

They claim more than 50% of their units have been sold? I find it curious that they have run full page ads, as I recall, promoting their "success" and yet this number is not included in the story.

At a time when networks of people we know or to whom we can reach become more and more important, here's a simple question.....how well networked are we in Chapelboroham? Sure, we can reach the people we know or use Facebook et al to reach somewhat beyond that. But suppose you just want to reach out to someone you see in a shop, or even down the street, or in the news. How easy is it to find and attempt to connect with that person? Pretty hard, from my experience.

What if we created a directory of masked (to avoid spam) e-mail addresses for the whole area so anyone could send a note to anyone else? Real names but no e-mail addresses visible - it really works!

Why is is that PSNC does not supply its residential customers with natural gas meters that are easy to read? The dials are very confusing.

The link above is to a Canadian energy company that does provide easy to read meters. See the first photo.

When I called PSNC, and later spoke with a Todd MINGUS, in the metering department I was told that they had no plans to replace the existing meters (which I believe are called "electric mechanical") with models that are easy to read (odometer display).

Mr. MINGUS said that none of the companies that supply them with meters produce what is pictured in the linked site above.

Yes, there are issues related to power source, their "RF device", etc., but I did not learn of any apparently valid reason why this change is not being made to easier to read meters.

The same energy that is required to turn the clock dials on the existing meters (pictured second on the Canadian site) could turn the numbers in an odometer fashion as it apparently does on the first one pictured on this site.

The easier it is to read these meters, the more likely we all are to manage our energy usage better, and I hope we can find a way to get from here to there.

PSNC is deploying automated meter reading. If this can transmit to a truck on the street, why can it not transmit to a simple panel inside the house?

One of these may be the project (but I do not see it) that held up traffic today at 2:30 for nearly 45 minutes north or eastbound on 54/15-501 in Chapel Hill. They seem to be adding additional space in the left turn lane for Laurel Hill Road. I presume that is to accomodate more students at the Roman Catholic School there. It was a huge inconvenience and I have seldom seen so many drivers pass others waiting in line after a clear warning to merge left. I thought people had better manners around here.

Brian LITCHFIELD, assistant director at Chapel Hill Transit has assured me that there is a policy in place on all Chapel Hill Transit buses - prohibiting the use of any cellphone - but not necessarily all other electronic devices - by drivers when the buses are in motion. I asked yesterday after reading the news from California implementing such a policy on train operators, at least some of them and at least temporarily. The Chapel Hill Tranist policy:
"CHT drivers are not permitted to use cell phones while the bus, car, or van is in service
or in motion. Use of cell phones distracts your attention from driving safely. The use of a
cell phone with an earpiece is also prohibited. Please do not wear your earpiece while in the
driver’s seat." This the text of the California measure.

Triangle Transit’s Route 420 (Hillsborough to Chapel Hill) is experiencing overcrowding during peak commute times. To address this issue, Triangle Transit is working with Chapel Hill Transit to add vehicles with more seating capacity to this route during peak commute times. Mid-day service would still be operated by Orange Public Transportation (OPT).

In addition to increasing capacity during peak commute times, Triangle Transit is also proposing a change in the route to provide service to the new Durham Tech Orange County campus in Hillsborough and the new 125-space Park and Ride lot provided by Orange County adjacent to the campus.

Please note that the Triangle Sportsplex P&R lot and three stops on NC 86 (Home Depot, Stanback M.S., and Millhouse Rd) would no longer be served during peak commute times. The Durham Tech Orange County Park and Ride lot would be served all day.

The routing changes in both the peak and mid-day will also likely have some small effects on the schedule. Triangle Transit expects that the new routing may make the peak trip faster.

Triangle Transit is still exploring the feasibility of these service changes. Any implementation date is still to be determined

Storm update from the Town

This appears to have been issued at 10 AM (received by e-mail about 10:30 AM). Note the success rate for the use of the Town's Code Red system that is supposed to be a way that the Town can reach all of us in the event of an emergency.

"Tropical Storm Hanna Update
09/06/09 - Tropical Storm Hanna has caused minimal problems for the Chapel Hill area. Heavy rain bands began to pass through the area just after midnight. Only a few minor power outages have been experienced and all traffic signals are operating.
At approximately 4:15 the low lying areas (mostly parking lots) in the South Estes area began to flood. This primarily included Brookwood, Camelot and Ridgefield. At this time no buildings have been involved.
Police activated the Code Red system to advise residents in the specific areas of the rising water and police and fire personnel went door-to-door to suggest residents move their cars and consider relocating. Few if any left the complexes. Approximately 4,348 calls were made with a 53% contact rate.
The Town of Chapel Hill requested that Orange County activate the shelter at Smith Middle School with minimal staff for any residents who wanted to relocate. It was opened with a skeleton staff and as of this report it is still open but no residents have taken advantage of it.
Umstead Drive is flooded and barricaded off this morning.
Six to 8 inches of water is across Weaver Dairy Road at Kingsmill Apartments and a tree on a house has been reported at Summerfield crossing. There were no injuries.
